The Lonely Planet Guide was very valuable as an overview guide. We read it first to get a sense of where in Japan we really wanted to go, then zoomed in to sketch out some of our itinerary and book lodging. We didn't take it on the trip only because we had city-specific guides for each of Kyoto and Tokyo. It has more pictures than many guides which I find helps in that initial overview, but it does make the book more expensive.
