The Japan Rail bullet train. There are many shinkansen lines and they have associated speeds, like the [Amtrak] Metroliner or Acela. The Nozomi is the fastest, makes the fewest stops, and is the [famed fastest train in the world]. It's also super enough that regular JR passes don't cover it, so we didn't get to ride it. We took the Hikari, Kodama,Wide-View Shinano, and Asama shinkansen. Once you get into an area, there are many local trains run by many different companies; the Japan Rail Pass only covers JR trains, so we had to pay for our side-trip to Nara.
